Tulok is a young Inuit boy from Alaska. He is not an Eskimo. It is a name his people don't like. It means 'raw meat eaters'. His family catches fish and hunts. They hunt reindeer and seals when it's warm. They use the skin from these animals for clothes. In winter, Alaska is very cold and snowy. When they hunt, they make houses from snow blocks. They are called igloos. Igloos protect people from the cold. Tulok loves winter because he can have snowball fights. Also, he can ride on a sled pulled by dogs. Every day, Tulok finds joy in Alaska.

Unit 4 A Mysterious Land

Hi, I'm Jake! This summer, I went to Mongolia. Mongolia is a place in Asia. It is surrounded by big countries, Russia and China.

There, I stayed in a "ger." A ger is like a big, round tent. It had the shape of a dome. Inside, it had colorful rugs. There was a warm stove right in the middle. We used the stove for cooking and staying cozy.

Some of these gers even use solar energy. They make electricity with it! Mongolian families raise lots of animals and eat plenty of meat and milk.

I was lucky to be there during Naadam. Naadam is their huge summer party. It’s full of games and sports. I got to participate and raced on a horse. What an adventure!

Unit 4 Murphy’s Law

Today was just terrible from start to finish! In the morning, I chose to ride a bike to school. Sadly, my bike broke down. Next, I had English class. We had to write stories. I got the lowest grade because I misunderstood the question. After school, my friend and I got ice cream. Sadly, mine fell on the ground. Back home, I told Dad everything. He felt sorry for me. He said it was Murphy's Law.

What is that? My dad explained it. It comes from Edward Murphy. He was an aircraft engineer. Murphy believed if bad things could happen, they probably would. This idea helped to improve safety for pilots. Dad told me something important. He said we can beat Murphy’s Law. How? By being ready and careful. We should be prepared for surprises.

Unit 1 The Genius Driver

Albert Einstein was a very smart man. In 1921, he received the Nobel Prize for his work. Interestingly, his driver was clever too! Once, they were going to a college. Einstein didn't want to give his lecture at a school. He was very tired. His driver, Hans, had a suggestion. He said,  "Let me do the lecture. I've heard it many times." The people at the school did not know what Einstein looked like. So, Einstein and Hans switched roles. Hans gave the talk, while Einstein sat with the audience. When Hans was done, someone asked a question. Hans politely replied, “This question is so easy. Even my driver can answer it." Einstein then stood up and provided the answer! Later, Einstein made an offer. He said, "Let me drive." Hans was surprised. Einstein said, “I’m happy to offer someone as smart as you a pleasure.”

Unit 7 Baby’s Big Day

In some Asian countries, babies get special gifts on their first birthday. These gifts are part of certain traditions. In China, there's a ritual for predicting a baby's future career. Objects are placed on the ground. The baby picks one. The object might hint at their future. For example, they might become a musician if they pick a guitar. In Japan, there's a ceremony called Issho Mochi. Babies carry a 1.8kg rice cake on their back. Parents make it heavier by pressing down. This is to prepare them for future challenges. After this ceremony, everyone wishes for the baby's long and healthy life. These customs carry a deep meaning. They prepare babies for what lies ahead. Do you think these traditions are helpful?

Unit 4 A Memorable Arbor Day

April 10th, 2023, was Arbor Day, a day I'll always remember. I was anticipating and excited to start the day. My family and friends joined me at the park under the clear, sunny sky.

We planted small trees, filling me with gratitude. Trees provide shade, fruits, and clean air, essential for life. This knowledge deepened my appreciation for the moment.

Our picnic under the trees felt special, enhancing our bonding experience. We captured these moments in photos, creating memorable keepsakes. The day was a celebration of togetherness and happiness.

As evening came, I reflected on the day’s deeper meaning. It was about love, bonding, and making unforgettable memories. I felt nostalgic, thankful for the day and the memories we created.

Unit 4. Unwrapped : A Gift, A Dream

September 18, 2023

Dear Diary,

Today was super exciting. I got a package from Aunt Mina. Inside, there was a beautiful set of chopsticks and forks. It’s a simple gift but really meaningful to me because I love both Western and Eastern foods so much. Aunt Mina always knows just what will make me happy.

Holding these gifts, I suddenly felt full of inspiration. Now, I’m all set on creating fusion desserts, because my biggest dream is to become a patissier. I’ve decided to dive into mixing dessert recipes with techniques and tastes from both East and West. Think about a dessert like orange ginger Yakgwa or Matcha chocolate rice cake!

This choice seems like a big step toward my dream, and I’m super excited. I’m even thinking about taking a class on fusion pastry methods. I’m overflowing with excitement, but I’m ready for the challenge. It’s amazing how a thoughtful gift can spark so much joy and inspiration.

Unit 6. Lizzie's Mysterious Shoe Adventure

One bright day in New York, Lizzie was getting ready. She had a movie audition. She looked at her shoes. She thought,"Today, I want something different." She thought of a shoe store she had seen before. It was little and hidden. Inside, an old lady showed her shiny, magic shoes. "These shoes," she whispered, "will take you somewhere new." Being curious, Lizzie tried them on.

Suddenly, she found herself in a beautiful forest. Huge trees gave her shade. Bright flowers were all around. Birds with colorful feathers sang melodious tunes. Lizzie felt inspired and started singing. Her song echoed through the forest. Animals came to dance and sing with her. Frogs, deer, and more joined in. It felt like a dream! After some time, Lizzie knew she needed to go back. She clicked her shoes three times. She said, "Take me back to New York." Just like that, she was back in the magical shoe store.

The old lady laughed gently. "Did you like your adventure?" she asked. Lizzie nodded. Her eyes were sparkling with excitement. She bought the shoes. She wore them to her audition. But she kept her forest trip a secret. She was cherishing it deep in her heart.

Unit 6. The Zoo’s Greatest Debate: Captivity or Freedom?

Greenfield's Evergreen Zoo was not just a place to see animals. It was a beloved part of the town. The zoo was a peaceful, safe place for animals and a fun spot for kids to learn. But one morning, the animals were missing! The people were shocked! In the town square, people wondered who could have taken them. Mrs. Lee, a teacher, was worried, while Mr. Kim, a regular visitor, was confused. It is because he saw the animals there the day before.

Jun, a smart boy, thought maybe the animals ran away for freedom. But his friend Soo pointed out that the zoo is important for keeping endangered animals safe. It also teaches children about them.

Jun started looking for clues and found some strange footprints near the lion's pen. Following the trail, he found Mr. Park, the zookeeper. He was with the animals in a shaded area. Mr. Park explained that he wanted to see if the animals would like being in the open. But they seemed lost without their home. Jun agreed that while not everyone agrees about zoos, animal happiness should come first.

The situation made everyone think: should the animals go back to the zoo or be free in the wild?
