Unit 2 Pompeii Burns
Hello friend,
Let me share a story. It’s about what happened in a place called Pompeii in Italy last year. My mom and I were visiting my uncle's house. One day, we saw smoke from across the bay. It was coming up from Mount Vesuvius. My mom said, "Look, the volcano is beginning to erupt!" We were all surprised.
Some people decided to flee. But many stayed in the town. The volcano got very angry. The people who stayed couldn't leave. My uncle wanted to help. He went there with his boat. Sadly, he and many others didn't make it.
Ash from the volcano covered everything. It covered homes, animals, and stores. They all got buried. This ash turned into something like stone. Maybe in the future, people will find out what exactly happened. I'm going to write down everything I remember. This might help them know.

Unit 1 An Amazing Gift
In 1886, France sent a special gift to America. This gift was a large statue of a lady. She had a crown and a torch in her hand. Guess what? She was the Statue of Liberty. She is also known as Lady Liberty. The word liberty means being free. The French shipped her to the USA to honor being free. The statue came in 350 pieces. It took four months to assemble her again! Today, she is the most well-known statue in the whole world. She’s in New York Harbor. The statue is made of copper. Initially, the copper was shiny brown. But now it’s green. This is because copper changes color with time. To see everything from her crown, you must be fit. There are 393 steps to get to the top!

Unit 5 The Fast Man
Long ago, a king from France was on a journey through Spain. He felt hungry and asked his attendant to look for food. The attendant found a small house that belonged to a not-so-rich man. He asked him to provide food for the king.
Quickly, the man took eggs and beat them into a mixture. He then cooked them in a pan. The man whipped up the meal quickly. Seeing how fast the man was, the king exclaimed, “Quel homme leste!” In French, this means “What a quick man!” The word 'omelet' is similar to 'homme leste,' a French phrase meaning 'quick man.' This is the reason behind the dish's name.
Omelets are easy and fast to make. You just need to mix some eggs, cook them, and you're done. You can change the flavor by adding ham, tomatoes, or onions. Why not give it a try yourself?

Unit 2 A Triangle’s Dream
I’m not happy being a triangle. "Wizard, can you give me one more side?" Now I've turned into a square, complete with four sides! But with the window open, it's chilly. I'm cold, flat, and feeling dull. What now? "Wizard, I need another side!" Suddenly, I'm at a baseball field. I turned into a pentagon with five sides. I'm the home plate! But, oh no! I'm getting dirty from the baseball players' steps on me. "Wizard, I want more sides!" And poof! I'm a circle, shining and warm. Like the sun, I am totally bright. But oops, now I'm very hot. "I miss being a simple triangle." Back to being a triangle, I realize I'm happiest being myself. It feels good to be me!

Unit 4 A Memorable Arbor Day
April 10th, 2023, was Arbor Day, a day I'll always remember. I was anticipating and excited to start the day. My family and friends joined me at the park under the clear, sunny sky.
We planted small trees, filling me with gratitude. Trees provide shade, fruits, and clean air, essential for life. This knowledge deepened my appreciation for the moment.
Our picnic under the trees felt special, enhancing our bonding experience. We captured these moments in photos, creating memorable keepsakes. The day was a celebration of togetherness and happiness.
As evening came, I reflected on the day’s deeper meaning. It was about love, bonding, and making unforgettable memories. I felt nostalgic, thankful for the day and the memories we created.

Unit 2. Behind the School Gates
September 15, 2023
Dear Mr. Lee,
Hello!
How are things? We're all good here and miss you a lot. We're writing to invite you to an exciting cultural event at our school – our annual festival. It's a day full of fun from different cultures. We'd love for you to join.
The festival is on October 15th, right here at our school. This year, we're celebrating "Celebrations of Cultures." We'll have live music and dances from all over the world. There's even going to be a talent show. We also have a fashion show featuring traditional clothes from many countries. After the fashion show, you can try on some of these clothes! If you're into sports, there will be games like soccer, cricket, and rugby.
We want to involve the community. So we'll have charity programs and lots of opportunities for networking. It's a great chance for students from different places to help each other and make new friends. Plus, we're having a quiz about cultures with prizes. Parents are welcome to join in too. We hope you can make it and add to the celebration.

Unit 2. Homework on Weekends: The Balance of Learning and Play
Sara and Ben were two classmates who couldn’t wait for the weekend. But this Friday was different—Mrs. Johnson gave them homework for the weekend. Sara felt sad but thought, “Weekend homework is helpful. It helps us remember what we learn and get ready for tests.” Ben disagreed, saying, “Weekends are our break from school. We need time to rest.”
On Saturday, Sara focused on her homework. She went through her notes, finished the assignments, and felt proud of herself. She even had time to relax later. Meanwhile, Ben spent his weekend having fun. He went outside, rode his bike, climbed trees, and played fetch with his dog. But on Sunday night, Ben felt worried. He thought, “I should have completed my homework before I started playing.”
When Monday came, Sara felt ready, while Ben felt nervous. Mrs. Johnson noticed that some students liked weekend homework, while others wanted to relax more. She told us, “Homework is important for school, but you also need to rest. Let’s find a better balance.” In the end, they agreed to have less weekend homework, making both Sara and Ben happy.
